Aloha,
On Thursday’s 10:00 Whale Watch, Captain Jeff reports seeing the same two sub-adult Humpbacks he watched the day before. How would he know they were the same two? These two whales looked to be about the same size as the whales he watched the day before, they were behaving similarly to the whales he watched the day before, and most tellingly, they had distinctive fluke patterns that he recognized from Wednesday’s trip, We found these two whales offshore of Kohala Ranch, and they stayed with us for over an hour, surfacing, spouting, and then diving for 20 minutes. It’s actually fairly unusual for us to encounter the same whales in the same area on two days in a row. So why did these whales choose to stick around the Kawaihae area? Our best guess is……… they have to be somewhere!!!!! But our Sail with the Whales Cruise brought us the “show of the year” (so far)! We not only both began and ended the cruises surrounded by dolphins, but we saw multiple pods of whales and they were popping up everywhere. We saw lots of pectoral slapping, and not just one, not just two, but MULTIPLE breaches and a bunch of them were really close to the boat!

Captain Claire’s Humpback Fact of the Day: We used to think that the whales that arrived on the coast of the Big Island spent their Hawaii-time here with us. Research and close observation of individuals has proved us wrong. While the Humpbacks seem to prefer to spend most of their time on the lee sides of islands and in water less than 600 feet deep, they will travel between the islands (not in any particular direction that we’re aware of)….females who have calves travel less frequently though.
