Aloha,
Guests joining us for Monday’s Snorkel and Whale Watch Adventure Cruise got some great sightings of our favorite trio of whales…Mom, Baby, and Escort. Both Mom and the Escort were big, big whales. All three of them cut across our bow maybe only 50 yards away. And when they decided to dive, we got views of both the escort’s flukes and mom’s flukes (which is actually kind of strange — usually a mom doesn’t lift her flukes when diving, as a fluke’s up position generally precedes a deep dive. Baby isn’t able to dive very deeply, and Mom doesn’t leave her calf alone at the surface).
Mahalo,
Claire
Captain Claire’s Humpback Fact of the Day: The first whales to leave Hawaii each year are mature females (who are either newly pregnant, or taking time off between pregnancies), followed by sub adult whales, and then, mature males. The last to leave are new mothers with their calves.
