June 1st, 2018 Update

The lava flow is definitely not threatening a homes across a wide portion of the island.
Aloha,
Today, in a story about the lava from Kilauea on CBSNews.com, we read this line: “The lava is threatening more homes across a wide portion of the Big Island”. Really? While the lava flow is real, and the people living in the area are in actual danger, the reporter and editor responsible for this story are really missing the mark.
We’re posting a picture today that you may have seen floating around on the internet. We completely understand that many people are not familiar with the topography and sheer mass of our island, but we wish that reporters would do even a minimal amount of research before publishing these un-truths.
As we’ve mentioned daily, there is no reason to avoid visiting Hawaii! If you have plans to come to any of the Hawaiian islands, please don’t be swayed by this news cycle to cancel them. We urge you to direct your concern to the small portion of the population here who is impacted by Kilauea’s activity. As we’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, the Hawaii Island United Way, the Hawaii Food Bank, the Salvation Army, and the American Red Cross are all accepting donations!
If you’d like to speak directly to someone on the island for the latest unbiased updates, please call us at 808.886-6666 ext. 1, or check in with us at Hawaii Ocean Sports on facebook. You can email us too — information@hawaiioceansports.com.

Memorial Day Update

Memorial Day – Light trades and clear skies at Anaeho’omalu Bay!
Aloha,
The trade winds have returned, and our air is clear (as you can see in today’s photo). If you’ve been keeping up with the news about the lava flow though, you’ve undoubtedly read about the lava reaching the Puna Geothermal Plant. Officials predicted this may happen, so they have capped the wells (10 with water, and the 11th with bentonite clay). Both federal and state agencies are monitoring air quality over there and so far no sulfur dioxide gases have been detected (nor are these gases expected to be emitted).
