Our Wednesday morning Wake Up with the Whales Cruise started off with a bang! We weren’t on the water very long before we saw an explosion of breaching…multiple whales and multiple breaches. While all that was going on, we also got to witness multiple tail lobs (that’s what we call it when whales repeatedly slap their flukes on the surface of the water). This whole melee turned into a bit of a chase as the entire group of Humpbacks began heading north. We paralleled them for awhile, until we had to turn the boat around and head back to the bay for our next cruise.
As soon as we boarded the guests for our Mid-Morning Whale Watch Cruise, we started looking for the competitive pod of Humpbacks we had just left, and luckily, we found them. They weren’t quite as crazy on the surface as they had been earlier, but a couple of times, they surprised us by surfacing quite close to the boat. After those encounters, they must have learned what they wanted to learn about us, because we never saw them again.
