Our last day of 2020 started out very calmly with multiple sightings of single whales spouting and sounding during both of our Morning Whale Watch Cruises.
Things were a bit different for our final cruise of 2020 though. We encountered a pod of 3 adult Humpbacks early on in our Pau Hana Sunset Cruise. These 3 stayed with us the entire trip, surfacing every 15 minutes, and then every 8 minutes. On several occasions, they were fairly close by (though the picture doesn’t really do the experience justice…you’d have to be aboard and listen to them breath for the full effect)!
Wishing you Hau’oli Makahiki Hou from all of us at Ocean Sports!
Ocean Sports Whale Fact of the Day: Research suggests that most Humpbacks who come to Hawaii don’t spend the entire winter with us. An average stay lasts between a month and 6 weeks. Possible exceptions to this rule include dominant males, who may spend more time here to optimize mating opportunities, and females who give birth after arriving in Hawaii. They might spend a little longer here so that their calves can grow large enough to successfully swim back to Alaska.
