Every once in awhile we have one of those days where we wish everyone who’s ever been whale watching with us was aboard, and Wednesday was one of those days!
We actually had to apologize to the guests who joined us on our Wake Up with the Whales Cruise as we totally spoiled them for any future Whale Watch Cruises. Not only did a Mom/calf pod spend considerable time investigating our boat from underneath, but we also got to watch baby breach about a foot away from the boat. But that wasn’t all…we saw no less than 30 breaches from adult whales all around us. We also got to see pec slaps and tail lobs from those adult Humpbacks.
From beginning to end, there was so much action, we didn’t catch our breaths until we were in the bay on the way back to our mooring…and even during that portion of the cruise the marine life viewing didn’t end as we got to see a green sea turtle pop his head up to take a look at the boat!

Ocean Sports Whale Fact of the Day: Researchers have observed that Humpback calves are very playful, investigating all kinds of objects in their environment (including, as we saw today, our boat), interacting with their moms, and even interacting with passing pods of dolphins. But for as many calves as we see in Hawaii during the winter, we never have observed the calves playing with each other. Though we’re not sure why this is, perhaps the new moms won’t allow a calf not her own to approach, because she doesn’t want to feed the wrong one.
