Wednesday’s Wake up with the Whales Cruise started kind of slow. We saw spouts here and there, but it took us awhile to really lock in on which whales to watch. Throughout the course of the cruise we saw 6 different Humpbacks, however the highlight of the cruise was watching a BIG (maybe 50′ long) Humpback on the surface. As we watched him, he did multiple head lunges, and kinda’ half breaches, followed by a lot of tail lobs. And then, to top it off this guy breached 5 different times, all about 100 yards from our idling boat! Unreal!
Guests on our Snorkel & Whale Watch Adventure Cruise spent some time with a Mom/Calf/Escort pod. We first saw the calf in the beginning of our cruise right outside of the bay. We stopped to watch him, and then we saw a bigger whale surface further away from the calf than we thought Mom would have been. After this big whale disappeared from sight, baby came back up to the surface, followed by Mom…and she was right next to her calf…so we guessed our other big whale was their escort. After snorkeling, while on our sail back to the bay we saw lots of spouting Humpbacks, but none of them swam particularly close to us.

Ocean Sports Whale Fact of the Day: Humpback Whales have massive tongues. An 80,000 pound Humpback has a two-ton tongue! If you had a similarly proportioned tongue, and you weighed 150 lbs, your tongue would weigh 7.5 lbs (in actuality it weighs around 3.5 ounces).
