Guests on Tuesday’s Mid-Morning Whale Watch Cruise got to see 6 different Humpbacks multiple times. Most of the sightings were from a couple hundred yards away, but twice, whales surfaced about 100 yards from us. Those of us who were looking at the right place at the right time also got to see a breach about 300 yards away.
We were absolutely delighted when we lowered the hydrophone during the trip. Not only were the singing whales close to us (based on how loud they were), but they were producing sounds that we had never heard before including some very deep bass notes, followed by some very high squeaks (more on this in today’s Fact of the Day).

Ocean Sports Whale Fact of the Day: Humpbacks produce sounds in frequencies ranging from 10 hz to 24 khz. A healthy young adult human can generally hear sounds in frequencies between the ranges of 20 hz to 20 khz which means that we’re not even hearing everything the whales are singing.
