Deja Vu
Aloha,
We hadn’t even gotten off of our mooring when we saw our first breaches during our Thursday Wake up with the Whales Cruise out of Anaeho’omalu Bay. These whales were about 1000 yards from us, and we still had to navigate out of the bay in order to approach them, so by the time we got in their vicinity, they had stopped breaching. But that was ok, because we found ourselves with pods of Humpbacks at our 3:00, 12:00 and 9:00. As if that weren’t enough, later in the cruise we were mugged by two big Humpbacks who at first were hanging out about 100 feet below us (Captain Will noticed them via our fish finder). These whales surfaced right at our stern and then spent about 10 minutes checking us out. In the meantime, we had deployed our hydrophone and got to listen to a lot of other Humpback voices. Not to be outdone, guests on our Glass Bottom Boat Cruise got to see a Mom/Calf/Escort pod interacting with a couple of bottlenose dolphins at the mouth of Anaeho’omalu Bay.
We experienced the best kind of deja vu during our Late-Morning Whale Watch Cruise. Besides seeing lots of spouts and flukes from traveling Humpbacks, while we were sitting at idle Captain Will just happened to glance at our fish finder and saw a couple of Humpbacks 100 feet below us (does that sound familiar???). Just like what happened during our first trip, these whales surfaced at our stern and then spent several minutes checking us out. We’re 99% sure they weren’t the same two whales we had met earlier in the day as our 10:30 Humpbacks seemed to be a bit bigger than our 8AM Humpbacks. Later in the cruise we found a Mom/Calf/Escort pod. Baby was at the “squirmy” stage of his life, twisting and diving down to Mom pretty frequently. We also got to see him breach 3 times, and Mom do sort of a half-hearted tail lob aimed at that escort.
Mahalo,
Claire
Ocean Sports Whale Fact of the Day: We’ve never witnessed a Humpback taking care of two calves. We know she could conceive twins (and whalers occasionally would find twin fetuses) but we doubt she could carry twins to term. And even if she could, we really doubt she could produce the 200 gallons of milk she’d need each day to feed two calves!
