Uncoordinated Cutey
Aloha,
Tuesday morning’s Wake up with the Whales Cruise from Kawaihae started out pretty quiet. Sure, we saw a lot of spouts from a lot of different Humpbacks, but none of them was doing much on the surface besides spouting and diving. We got a couple of close looks at a Mom/Calf duo who surfaced a few times just about 100 yards from us (of course the baby had to breathe more frequently, so we saw a lot more of him than we did of his mom). We also got to see a different calf breach from a couple hundred yards away. This calf looked a bit uncoordinated while breaching — his landing was more of a belly flop than a true landing on his back.
Mahalo,
Claire
Ocean Sports Whale Fact of the Day: At birth, a Humpback whale calf weighs between 2,000 and 3,000 pounds which makes us think, “Poor Mom — that’s gotta’ hurt”!. But the calf actually weighs somewhere between just 3% and 4% of his Mom’s weight. Interestingly, at birth, human babies are proportionally larger, averaging 4%-5% of their Mom’s weight.
